One Word for Your Money Next Year: Caution
Oct 7, 2026 · Bill Hajdu · 6 min read

On Monday I told you the good news about 2027: the same fire that broke couples up this year turns toward building them next year.
Here's the other half of that sentence. The flip that helps your love life works against your wallet.
I'm the Firepig. In over 35 years of doing readings, I've learned that every year hands you something with one hand and takes something with the other. The Fire Sheep hands you love. It takes discipline with money, unless you hold on to it yourself.
If you only remember one word about money next year, make it this one: caution.
The Same Flip, Seen From the Other Side
Quick recap from Monday's post. 2026 and 2027 are both fire years, and both the Horse and the Sheep are fire signs. Next year is another double fire year. The passion carries over. Its direction changes.
The Horse year has arguably been better for making money than for relationships. The Sheep year flips that. The odds are better for love and relationships, and worse for succeeding in business.
That's not a punishment. It's the cycle balancing itself. But if you walk into 2027 with Horse-year money habits, you'll feel it.
Why the Sheep Spends
This isn't only astrology. In Mahjong as well as in Chinese astrology, the Sheep is associated with spending, and especially with overspending.
Now add the fire. A double fire year pulls you toward taking risks. Big bets, fast moves, "this is the one." In a Horse year, some of that risk-taking pays off. In a Sheep year, it may not be a great idea.
So you've got an animal that likes to spend, sitting on a year that likes to gamble. You can see where that goes if nobody's paying attention.
What it asks of you is simple to say and hard to do:
- Don't stretch yourself too thin. Not your cash, not your time, not your credit.
- Don't get carried away by emotion. The Sheep is a year of feelings, and feelings make expensive decisions.
- Don't over-extend. If a commitment only works when everything goes right, it's too big for this year.
- Stick with the plan you already have. Whatever your business plan or budget is, next year is the year to follow it, not to rewrite it in a burst of excitement.
Look at the news and you can already feel the temptation. Even in AI, there are warnings that the investment bubble might be getting ready to break. I'm not saying you need to be scared. I'm saying you need self-control, so your passion doesn't make a reckless decision for you.
Not scared. Careful. In a Sheep year, those are two very different things.
Conservative, not high-risk. That's the posture. If you run a business, that's your whole strategy for 2027 in one line.
Your Career Is a Different Story
Most people don't own a business. They have a career. And for a career, the Sheep year reads a little differently.
The Sheep doesn't favor relationships at work the way it favors them in love. But it's still a good sign for relationships, and at work, relationships are going to matter a great deal next year. The reason is simple: people are going to be sensitive.
That cuts both ways.
If your passion pulls you into conflict with people at work, it will hurt your career. In a sensitive year, a sharp word lands harder and gets remembered longer.
If you keep your self-control, stay on good terms, and put your passion into the work and into the relationships that count, the extra fire becomes motivation. It gives you the drive to put out what you need to advance.
That's why I call passion a double-edged sword for career next year. The same fire can make it the best of years or the worst of years. It depends on how you channel it.
Two rules I'd tape to your monitor:
- When you find yourself in a conflict with someone at work, walk away. Don't lose your self-control and say or do something you'll regret. The conversation can happen later, when the heat is gone.
- Never get into a personality conflict with your boss. At all costs. In a year where people are sensitive, that's the one fight that can quietly end your chances.
How the Mirror Turns "Be Careful" Into a Decision
"Be careful" is good advice and useless on its own. Everybody agrees with it until the moment they're excited about something. That's where the Mahjong Mirror earns its keep.
The Mirror looks at any decision from four angles. Two of them do the heavy lifting in a Sheep year.
The Second Angle: know thyself. Who are you in this decision, today? Not who you want to be. Are you calm, or are you excited? Did this opportunity arrive after a good week, a bad week, a fight at home? In a year ruled by emotions, the honest answer to "how am I feeling right now?" tells you how much to trust your own enthusiasm.
The Third Angle: the opposition. What is actually standing in your way? Most years, the opposition is outside you: a competitor, a market, a difficult person. In a double fire Sheep year, the opposition is very often your own fire. The urge to spend, the urge to bet big, the urge to win the argument with your boss. Name it, and it loses half its power.
Put those two angles together and "caution" stops being a mood and becomes a method. Before a big purchase, a big investment or a hard conversation at work, ask: who am I right now, and is the thing in my way actually me?
The Number-One Skill
If I had to boil the whole Fire Sheep year down for money and work, it would be this: keep your emotions under control. That's probably the number-one thing you have to do in a Sheep year, and especially in a double fire Sheep year.
Love gets the fire's best side next year. Your money and your career get its test. Pass the test and the passion that tempts you becomes the passion that carries you.
If you want a framework for making those calls when the heat is on, it's all in The Mahjong Mirror: the four angles, how to read them, and how to use them on the decisions that matter most. And if you'd like me to look at your own year ahead, money and work included, book a reading.
