Feel Good Friday: Walk Away First, Answer Later
Oct 9, 2026 · Bill Hajdu · 5 min read

This week I gave you two sides of the same coin.
On Monday, the good side: next year's fire turns toward building love, where this year's fire broke a lot of couples up. On Wednesday, the test: the same fire tempts you to spend, to gamble and to pick fights at work, and the one word for money is caution.
Both posts ended in the same place. The number-one skill of a double fire Sheep year is self-control.
Here's the part I want you to feel good about. You don't have to wait until February to start. The calm Metal Dog month began yesterday and runs to November 6, the gentlest stretch of this whole fire year. If you were ever going to practice keeping your cool, this is the month the sky is helping you.
So this weekend, practice one move. When the heat rises, walk away first and answer later. Here are five ways to make it stick.
1. Name the Heat Before It Names You
The fire is easier to handle when you see it coming. The flush in your face, the fast reply forming in your head, the urge to hit "buy" right now. This weekend, when you feel it, say it to yourself in plain words: "I'm hot right now."
That's it. Just naming it puts a half-second between the feeling and the action. Half a second is often all you need.
2. Take the Walk, Literally
When you find yourself in a conflict, the best thing you can do is walk away. Not storm off. Walk away. Get a glass of water. Step outside. Go around the block.
I'd just come back from a forty-minute walk the morning I recorded my notes for this week, and I'll tell you, nothing cools a head like moving your legs. You'll come back with the same opinion and a much better way of saying it.
3. Sleep on Any Purchase You Didn't Plan
The Sheep spends, and next year's fire will tempt you to spend fast. Start the habit now. If it wasn't on your list and it costs more than you'd happily lose, it waits a night.
Most of the time you'll still want it in the morning, and you'll buy it calmly. Some of the time you won't, and you'll be glad you slept.
4. Answer the Hard Message Tomorrow
Next year people are going to be sensitive, at home and at work. A sharp text or email lands harder and lasts longer when everyone's feelings are close to the surface.
So this weekend, when a message makes your blood rise, write the reply if you need to. Then don't send it until tomorrow. Read it again with cooler eyes. You'll almost always change something. Sometimes you'll delete the whole thing.
5. Point the Fire at Someone You Love
Self-control isn't about putting the fire out. You can't, and you shouldn't want to. Next year's fire is the thing that deepens love.
So take the energy you didn't spend on an argument and give it somewhere good. Plan something for your partner. Call the person you've been meaning to call. If you're single, say yes to the invitation you were going to skip. That's the Sheep year in miniature: same fire, pointed at building.
The Weekend Challenge
Pick one of the five and do it at least once before Monday. Just one. Notice what happens when you walk away first and answer later.
You're not practicing for this weekend. You're practicing for 2027, in the one month this year that makes practice easy.
What's yours going to be? I'd love to hear which one you pick.
And if you'd like to know where your own fire is most likely to flare next year, in love, money or work, a personal reading is the place to look. The framework behind all of this is in The Mahjong Mirror.
